Our quest for the finest cinnamon lead us to Sri Lanka and introduced us to the highest quality variety of the spice, Ceylon Cinnamon (aka True Cinnamon, Cinnamon Verum). It is an incredible ingredient with an array of health benefits and a fascinating past. But foremost, the flavour and aroma of this variety is unparalleled and truly deserves its title as a superfood.
Perhaps one of the oldest traded commodities, cinnamon was used as early as 2000BC by the Egyptians for embalming mummies and as a preservative for meats. It was incredibly expensive as it had to be shipped by land with the Arabs holding a monopoly on all trade. To justify their high prices they would create elaborate stories, such as sourcing the spice from canyons guarded by ferocious snakes and ensure the locations were kept secret.
Christopher Columbus believed to no avail that he discovered the spice’s origin in the New World. He wrote to Queen Isabella sending samples, but they were unfortunately disapproved.
Other conquistadors, such as Gonzalo Pizarro, sought after cinnamon’s origins in the Americas catching word of the fabled Pais de la Canela (Cinnamon Country).
The Portuguese discovered cinnamon’s true source in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) around the early 1500s. They held a monopoly over the spice for the next 100 years until the Sri Lankans allied with the Dutch to overthrow them. The Dutch would go on to hold a monopoly over trade for the next 150 years until they were conquered by the British. By the time the British got their hands on the spice, many varieties were now grown elsewhere around the world so it lost its exorbitant price.
Still to this day, Ceylon Cinnamon is the most revered variety and holds its alias, True Cinnamon, with pride.
We feel like the old conquistadors 500 years ago trying to find the best cinnamon! Our first encounter was in Mexico, but we soon discovered the best quality cinnamon was Ceylon Cinnamon from Sri Lanka.
